As if it weren’t obvious that the Collins-Poah administration was making headways for impeccably handling the affairs of the GGAA; a source close to the administration tells MN Web that a recognized Health-Grades Pediatrician will deliver the keynote address during the GGAA 22nd annual national convention in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday May 26, 2012.

Patricia McQuilkin is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts who specializes in pediatric medicine in Worcester, Ma. With 20 years of experience as an MD, she also worked on the Navajo reservation in Arizona and helped in organizing free medical clinics for under deserved populations in Massachusetts.

She teaches at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where she is currently one of the residency directors and director of Global Health Education. Patricia McQuilkin is no stranger to Liberia-she debuted her career in global health-in 2009 when she recruited over 50 pediatric residents and faculty members to rotate at the JFK Medical Center.

Patricia McQuilkin’s selection comes at a time when the Collins-Poah administration is working tediously to assure Grand Gedeans that one of its major goals is: ‘focusing most of it resources in improving the healthcare sector of the County.’ Her particular area of interest is in medical work force capacity building through medical education and is currently involved in projects to help train doctors in both Liberia and Haiti.

“It will be an extraordinary honor for the GGAA family; we are thrilled to welcome Patricia McQuilkin to speak to us especially in her area of expertise,” said the source. “Her commitment to Global Health Education and help in organizing free medical clinics for under-deserved populations in her Massachusetts Community will be a teaching moment for healthcare practitioners within the GGAA, who aspire to lead and make their future mark on the County. No doubt, this year’s keynote speaker will make convention 2012 truly a remarkable one.”

In a related development, MN Web has learn that 2012 Convention goers are expected to meet for a welcome ‘meet and greet’ camaraderie evening on Friday May 25 at the Jacksonville Association of Fire-Fighters Hall on 618 Stockton Street, Jacksonville, Fl 32204. The next day on Saturday May 26, Convention Forum kicks off at 9: am-4: pm precisely at the Aramaic Palace Hall, St. Ephraim Catholic Church, on 4550 Kerman Boulevard-South, Jacksonville, Fl 32224.

From 8:pm till 4:am the same day; a Dinner Ball and a GGAA National Queen Contest to crown some of the finest Krahn Women in the Diaspora will convene at the Aramaic Palace Hall, St. Ephraim Catholic Church, on 4550 Kerman Boulevard-South, Jacksonville, Fl 3222.

On Sunday May 27 from 9: am till 7: pm, will be a beach outing and a farewell cookout to conclude the year’s festivities. GGAA Convention T-shirts, lapel pins, caps, CDs (GGAA-Songs) and many more souvenirs will be sold and a minimum donation of $50 to cover the entire 3 day event including meals and beverages will be highly recommended. According to a reliable source, a huge portion of donations from this year’s event is expected to benefit the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital in Liberia.

Other speakers and special guests of the President to include Hon. William Glay and Dr. James A. Sirleaf, Chairman of the Board and a Founding Member of the non-profit organization HEARTT. (Health Education and Relief Through Teaching)

An estimate of over 800 Grand Gedeans including friends and sympathizers are expected to throng Jacksonville, Fl during Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate custom and style.

The 2012 Reunion of the Bishop Juwle High School and the Saint Philomena Elementary School Alumni Association in the Americas will take place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from July 13-15 welcoming more than 400 reunion-goers.

In an exclusive interview with the President of the group; she said “The Palmetto State” was suggested by Dr. Eugenia Cooper-Merchant who domiciles in the State and has offer to serve as host member. According to their tradition, Myrtle Beach was picked by the 2011 reunion assembly which encourages rotation for yearly reunions.

“We are anticipating a huge turn out which of course means large proceeds to fund our many projects that benefit our Alma Maters (Bishop Juwle & St. Philomena Schools) and Myrtle Beach being a hot vacation spot; we hope our members and supporters will utilize this opportunity to enjoy it while attending all of our activities that weekend,” she said.

Since it’s founding about 23 years ago, BJHS/SPS Alumni Association in the Americas has achieved a whole lot. As proud pioneers of High School Alumni Associations in the US from the entire southeastern region of Liberia; they are well organized with focus on restoring the high academic standards of their Alma Maters in post-war Liberia.

According to vice-president Nyento Breeze, the organization has done major renovations at their schools in Zwedru, initiated a 20 students scholarship program for the last 4 years, sent large amounts of school supplies, text/reference books, computers, teachers’ bonuses and many others miscellaneous expenses. It has on board with it; some former dedicated faculty staffs including the former Principal Emeritus, William K. Reeves, some devoted nuns and former Peace-Corps Volunteers.

Critics believe the majority of success and productivity enjoyed by this noble organization unlike other Liberian organizations in the Diaspora is the fact that they continue to keep the rhetoric of politics totally out of their humanitarian work.

Asked to clarify rumors that the BJHS/SPS Alumni Association is limited to residents of the Christ the King Convent; President Felecia Reeves Saydee was feisty in dispelling the rumors. The soft-spoken President said some of the founding members of their organization who attended every reunion including Annie Cooper Wilson, Gbarwo Flahn, George Saydee etc. were not residents of the convent though the convent was not meant for males.

“Weeks let me say unequivocally, the information that our reunions bring together only Convent girls is misleading and has no platform,” adding, “visit our website and take a keen look at our photo gallery; you’ll see faces of every representation because we all share a common bond.” She emphasized.

One source who attended the 2011 BJHS/SPS reunion says there’s usually an aura of devotion and respect in the atmosphere during their encounter backed by a mutual bond which is restored in their standards of Catholic upbringing and discipline.

Myrtle Beach 2012 is expected to draw BJHS/SPS members in the US, friends, supporters and “present an attractive destination for those wanting to have a view and taste of coastal relaxation,” the organizing committee said.

On Friday July 13 from 6:00pm till 12:00 am reunion-goers will meet and greet at 4341 Live Oak Drive, Little River, South Carolina; this is the night when an honor will be bestowed on the ‘alumni of the year.’ Saturday July 14 from 10:00am till 2:00 pm: business meetings and elections to be held at 801 Eleven Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina follow by a banquet to be climaxed by a ball.

On Sunday July 15, at 11:00 am the final day of the reunion, a worship service at a local Episcopal Church follow by a brunch. At 2:00 pm on the same day, beach activities will kickoff which includes swimming, volleyball, board games and many more. The annual donation fees of $125/$200 will cover the entire event. The theme for this year’s convention is: “Inclusive Education, the way to Liberia’s Future.”

Since the departure of Western Missionaries like all Catholic schools in Liberia; BJHS/SPS continues to struggle financially and morally. Scars of the Liberian Civil War can be found everywhere as they try to rebuild their lives and bridge the large gap left behind.

These annual reunions held in the US which generate meager resources are a way of giving back to their Alma Mater to complete various projects earmarked.

D Wilson Barlee

The man who was repeatedly mentioned as a potential replacement to Chris Bailey for the highest post in Grand Gedeh County has categorically denied paying any dime amid swirling rumors he picked up the bill for Bailey’s medical expenses.

In an exclusive interview with MN Web, Wilson Barlee said he was confronted by Bailey in Philadelphia, who told him that after searching in Liberia; he found him potentially fit for recommendation to the President for the job.

“It was an open playing field for interested candidates; those rumors are fabricated, the County needed someone who could bring us together and after consulting with my family, I decided to give it a try,” he said. “Bailey is not my relative and I never try to persuade or influence him for the job.”

When asked whether he was evaluated by the President during the Zwedru conference; he expressed his “overwhelming” frustration, and emphatically stated that the meeting was not intended to vet superintendent candidates but a confab dubbed ‘Vision 2030 for Liberia.’ According to Barlee, President Sirleaf sole purpose for visiting the County was part of her government’s initiative to discuss development strategies for Liberia.

On the nomination of Willian Krayee as the new Superintendent for Grand Gedeh County; Barlee said he continues to receive numerous calls from family members and sympathizers who were disappointed in the process but advised him to remain determined.

“If this post was an elected one, I was going to beat everyone hands-down but again this is what our constitution says; President Sirleaf made her choice and I trust her judgment,” he said.

In 1997 William Krayee was selected by the NPP led Government to represent Gbarzon District in the Liberian Legislature; he served six years and recently contested on a UP ticket coming second to Grant in the race for District II in Grand Gedeh County. To his admirers, Krayee has the right resume to be taken seriously and believe he possesses a depth of experience as compare to his predecessor but his critics think otherwise.

However, Barlee cautiously affirmed that Jeremiah Sokan who was not publicly vying for the post must have played a role in limiting his chances for the job. According to him, he felt betrayed when rumors started swirling that Sokan asked GGUSU (Grand Gedeh University Student Union) to be petitioned. Sokan could not be reached for clarifications but earlier the same group petitioned Barlee in the presence of Sokan for the job.

“I felt betrayed by him because, we both shared notes prior to my departure for Liberia and the disclosure that he had been working behind closed-doors is very disheartening,” he said.

Meanwhile Barlee is calling on all Grand Gedeans to congratulate Krayee and make meaningful suggestions that will reflect the County’s positive image.

He said his family has been very supportive and reminded his critics that he doesn’t necessarily have to be Superintendent to help reconstruct his homeland. One political pundit said he believes Barlee’s long absence from the County must have curbed his chances for the post.

Barlee was very saddened in describing the state of the Zwedru Market which is located in the heart of the City. “Our County Officials need to do a lot in relocating the market because it is very unsafe and impedes traffic.”

In early May of this year, Barlee is expected to return to Liberia and settle permanently in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks (MN Web), Nyonkpao Wolo (Zwedru) & Tarnyon Nyenon (IEN) contributed to this story. Stay tuned for the rest of this interview…

The recent announcement by the National Administration that the Brothers’ Brother’s Foundation (BBF) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has offered to ship medical supplies to the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital in Zwedru, followed by an appeal by GGAA President to every Grand Gedean and the general public to donate a pack of surgical gloves; RLCEP was one of the first to heed that call.

Executive Director David G. Banto presented 21 boxes of surgical gloves totaling 2100 pieces on behalf of Rural Liberian Children Educational Program (RLCEP) to President Tillman Collins of the GGAA to aid in the venture. The items were donated on April 7, at the Upper Darby office of the RLCEP.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Association, Collins observed that healthcare professionals are constantly exposed to potentially harmful infectious agents such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other infectious diseases while caring for patients. “Medical practitioners have a compelling need to protect themselves, especially when in contact with contaminated blood and body fluids during the course of their work.” Collins warned.

The GGAA boss added that the donation will provide one such protective measure in curtailing the rapid spread of preventable diseases in Grand Gedeh and Liberia as a whole. He used the medium to call on Grand Gedeans and sympathizers of the GGAA to emulate the humanitarian example of Banto whom he called a true nationalist.

For his part, Banto said he donated the items in support of the Collins-Poah administration in their effort to improve the health of the local Grand Gedean Community. “On behalf of the Executive Board, and hard working team of volunteers at RLCEP, I am pleased to say that we are dedicated and committed to working with all sustainable community initiative groups that focuses on health improvement programs in poverty-stricken rural Liberia.” He concluded.

RLCEP is a nonprofit 501 (3) (C) humanitarian organization which caters to the education and health needs of the underprivileged and impoverished kids of rural Liberia base in the US and Liberia. Its mission is to provide educational support and health care services to the rural community schools and operates cultural-enrichment programs throughout local Liberian Communities in partnership with sustainable community initiatives fostering cultural understanding.

During Easter weekend when Christians all over the world feast and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 37 Grand Gedeans from throughout the US met in Providence, Rhode Island and completed a GGAA Workshop on Leadership.

The one-day Workshop was a joint endeavor by the Education and Training Committee in collaboration with the Collins-Poah Administration. The Workshop which was intended to discuss Effective Leadership and bring together 18 GGAA chapter presidents, officials of the National Administration and sympathizers, fell short of its objectives due to poor attendance.

The Workshop emphasized the importance of making financial report by leaders of the GGAA both on national and chapter-level; to provide new tools for nourishing a creative thinking through good leadership, the importance of education (with emphasis on youth empowerment) and members being informed and cognizant of their constitutional responsibilities.

It was precisely 1:09 PM when the master of ceremony Abass Johnson took to the podium and declared the workshop officially open. The wordings on the banner read: ‘a tchian-deh’ meaning, ‘we are learning’ which was the theme of the Workshop. A blissful prayer from Mother Theresa did not restrain the Chapter President of Rhode Island from criticizing the Education & Training Committee for not fully involving his chapter in the planning process of the workshop. Augustus Tarwo who is well known for his ‘’no-holds-barred’ attacks was this time cautiously optimistic that in the future such mistake will not be repeated.

For her part, Beatrice Swen who chairs the committee said it was time to move on as she recognized members of her committee. She named Abass Johnson, Calvin Duwayee, Esau Collins, Martha Yoway, Nyento Breeze, Charles Breeze, Yancy Peter Flah and Edmond Bargblor as those who quarterbacked the planning of the Workshop. Swen reminded her audience that according to the Constitution of the GGAA, her committee was empowered to conduct leadership trainings and workshops for all leaders of the Association and, she was proud to host the first of many Workshops to come.

“We are here today because we care about this noble organization, because we care for our people, because we love our children and want to see them accomplish these goals; therefore, we must continue to work in unity to succeed and meet these challenges”, adding, “for what unites us as a people and keeps us going is greater than what divided us.” She concluded.

Edmond Bargblor, the first speaker of the day did an impeccable job with the teaching and understanding of the Constitution of the GGAA. Bargblor was brilliant when he took to the podium. He distributed 24/36 inch posters, pens, copies of the GGAA Constitution and questionnaires written on a 2/3 inch slip. The goal was simple; in pairs of twos, each team was asked to peruse the constitution and answer the question provided on those slips without using direct translations. Fifteen minutes was the time ascribed to complete the presentation. Everyone in the room was fired up and pair-by-pair the accomplished Professor called each team to make their presentation based on the question asked.

Abass Johnson & Bea Swen setting up for the Workshop

To sum up, Barbglor reminded his audience that it is the lack of understanding of the GGAA Constitution that creates room for whole lots of confusion. “Our people need to be taught the Constitution so they can have a broad knowledge as to how the Administration operates; anything outside this is a recipe for disaster. He cautioned.

Esau Collins did a brilliant job when he introduced the second speaker. Her name was Comfort Doely-Leonard who spoke on the topic: ‘the importance of education with emphasis on youth empowerment.’ In a soft-spoken voice, the seasoned therapist was spirited in her presentation. She categorically itemized the goals and directions the youths within the GGAA should pursue. From teaching morals, vision, educational foundation, value of education, future of the youth, the advantage of education and empowerment to community development.

Reminding the audience, Comfort Doely-Leonard said, “Our youths are our precious jewels therefore we must treat them as such-do not limit your ability to succeed; utilize all the opportunities that are available to you now for these opportunities might not always be there.” She concluded.

At exactly 3:26 PM the master of ceremony introduced the third speaker who was no stranger to the GGAA family. He was Garettson Togba, the CEO of the familiar Voice of Gedeh Community Online Radio. Togba spoke on the ‘importance of financial management’ in the GGAA. He vehemently reminded the audience that financial report torments both leaderships and members; admonishing all leaders within the GGAA to know that financial report draws less credibility if not made.

Mrs. Comfort Doely-Leonard

From his deliberation, it was effortless to note that Togba was a professional in this business. He questioned: “how is your own financial house? Make sure that you as an individual should be in control of the future of your own finances.” He concluded his presentation by encouraging Grand Gedeans to acquire a life insurance policy, be the master of their finances, donate to the VOG and provide their services in creating meaningful programs that will reach the VOG audience.

Lunch lasted for approximately 45 minutes when Esau Collins wasted no time choreographing the achievements of Kai G. Wleh. In a humorous approach, Esau said it was resume like Wleh’s that should remind Grand Gedean youth the importance of education and was quick to observe disappointingly their absence.

When Kai Wleh took the microphone, he was scorching and blunt in his presentation which captioned: ‘Effective Leadership.’ ” He criticized the President of Liberia for making mockery out of qualified Grand Gedeans for just a mere Superintendent post. “Let Sirleaf make the appointment if Superintendent is the only job for us,” he asserted. He blamed selfish individual interest as the problem for our demise and reminded Grand Gedeans that ‘let qualification be the reason for any job requirement from government.’

Wleh’s presentation was more of a home-run moment for the listening audience who cheered all through the presentation. Topics included: pragmatic strategies to the emerging non-profit environment, leadership objectives, differences between leadership and managers, capacity and concepts for leadership, participation leadership, authoritarian leadership, and affective/affiliate leadership. Other entries under this topic included, leadership concepts, perspectives and approaches, different strategies that enhance and sustain effective leadership, credibility and organizational culture.

“Our leaders should have vision that provides opportunity for everyone and not be influenced by persuasion.” “Some may have not attended this workshop because they think they will be undermined and so people must see these brief points.” He said.

According to Wleh, what he sees at the workshop was not quantity but the caliber of patriotic Grand Gedeans who left everything to attend. He said no excuse can build Grand Gedeh and as leaders we were to provide the light. Wleh questioned the audience on voluntarism: which was applied in the villages during the times of our forefathers.

“Those that stayed away are the followers but we are the leaders;” challenging leaders to communicate the organization, mobilize our constituents, bring the willing and motivate us.

Copies of every speech delivered were given to the Education and Training Committee for onward distribution to all chapters not represented at the Workshop.

Also in attendance were Annie Dennis of New England Chapter and Augustus Tarwo of Rhode Island Chapter.

The New England Chapter of the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas will on Saturday, April 28, observe 22 years of existence amid the breakaway of the State of Rhode Island. Preparations are underway to host hundreds of Grand Gedeans and well-wishers whom are expected to storm the city of Worcester in droves.

Recently during the just concluded Leadership Seminar conducted by the GGAA’s Education & Training Committee in Providence, Rhode Island, our reporter caught up with Annie Dennis, President of the New England Chapter who gave a chronological detailed account of her upcoming inauguration; the plight of her chapter, founding fathers, challenges and how she intends to govern during her second and final term.

Founded in 1990 by Amos Gaye, McArthur Pardea, Gabriel Zarwea, Alfred Layee, Annie Dennis, Alphonso Bargblor and a list of others, the New England Chapter has seen its share of controversies but triumphed through it all as its members always stood unfaltering to amicably trash out their differences.

According to Dennis the night is expected to witness the honoring of prominent and hardworking Grand Gedeans both within and outside her chapter. Those expected to be honored include; Alfred Layee (founding member), former GGAA National President Adolphine Kannah, Rhode Island Liberian Community Leader Marie Kolego, Silvia Wright Collins, the mother of the State of New Hampshire and a host of others whom Dennis decided to keep as a surprise.

The event will be held at 7:00 PM at Our Lady of Mount Campbell Hall located on 28 Mulberry Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. A minimum donation of $50 (patrons) and $25 (ordinary) is highly recommended upon admission. Food, water and sodas are absolutely free. Lawrence Geor aka ‘LIB Kid’ will provide the sounds; VOG will broadcast the event live whilst Festina Julu is expected to co-host beside VOG anchor Aphonso Zeon-Soe as host.

Hon. John Tarley

Dennis told our reporter that during a general meeting the inaugural committee put forward few names and John Tarley was tapped as the Keynote Speaker. In fact, this will not be the first time for Tarley to address Diaspora Grand Gedeans. Tarley also heads a non-for-profit organization in Minnesota and has been a huge financial donor to the GGAA and Diaspora Liberian organizations. He has since accepted to keynote the event.

Dennis disclosed that GGAA National President Tillman Collins, ULAA’s President Gaye Sleh, Federation Folican President Yvonne Kamara and President Augustus Tarwo of Rhode Island Chapter are all expected to grace the occasion. “Augustus Tarwo will be there to bless the occasion traditionally as my father; New England gave birth to Rhode Island Chapter and there’s no way we will abandon this new child,” adding, “the success of this chapter will only reflect the good in us and gradually we will get there.” She said optimistically.

In a related development, with a chuckle Dennis said she does not intend to run for the highest office of the GGAA. “We have to give our young people the prospect to ‘step up to the plate’ as we remain in the rear to support them uncompromisingly.” She cautioned.

She told our reporter that Collins is doing an impeccable job but was quick to point out that he needs the full support of every Grand Gedeans to get the job done at 100%. “Many times we look up to our leaders to deliver but forget that we are all in the boat together,” suggesting, “the GGAA is like a mosaic and collectively is the only way we can achieve those goals.” She concluded.

If inducted into office on Saturday, April 28, 2012, Annie Dennis will join Augustine Manyeah (Pennsylvania Chapter), Alexander Barmon (Minnesota Chapter), and Cecelia Quaye (Indiana Chapter) all of whom are serving a second and final term this year as leaders of their respective chapters.

Many who know her say, “a hard nut to crack”, while her admirers believe she’s someone who would take a product of no value and remodel it and make it her own. Martha Kannah was unassumingly candid during this discourse. This interview is sure to draw parallels to the shifting tide of opinion regarding some of her stance on the County, Gbarzon District, Constitution amendments, embezzlement and Boley. Below is a full verbatim text of key exchanges with the former National President and how her views are expected to shape the destiny of the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Welcome Madam President; when politicians leave office we repeatedly see this trend of total disappearance from the political scene. Since your departure as President of the GGAA, what have you been up to?

Martha Kannah: I have always been around particularly involved with my local chapter. When it comes to the GGAA, Mr. Weeks I won’t just go away…AMK Enterprise is now on another level and my main focus is on my business which gives me the leverage to lend a hand to others.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Gbarzon District Association was one of the most viable organizations in the Diaspora; a model for other non-for-profit organizations but have recently lost its credibility and legitimacy. Some critics of the GDA accused Aphonso Zeon-Soe, Moses Ehrich, Jerry Ziah and Gbote Tahyor of hijacking the Association thus leaving the innocent people of the District to starve and meaningful projects cut short. What’s your take on this issue?

Martha Kannah: Well, two years ago Gbarzon District Association put a system in place; you may call it ‘tradition-rotational leadership’ where one clan succeeds the other after the tenure of the other. This system was devised by our Elders so as to avoid what we are now experiencing. After other clans served their time, Krazon Clan was asked to produce a leader but the leaders at the time augmented the constitution which was never amended. During the interim, Krazon Clan decided not to go by the constitution and refused to cooperate which led to this division, and if anyone tells you that Gbarzon District is not split, they’ll definitely be lying to you. However, there’s a mediation team set up and we are looking forward to see the organization in full swing again.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Madam President, do you have any suggestion for lasting peace within the GDA?

Martha Kannah: Oh sure-my suggestion will be for both administrations to complete a one year term as long as they can provide for the folks back home till we can get it right. Again it’s only a suggestion. Hope those involve with this division and strangle will see reason to restore the sanctity of this noble organization.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Dr. George Boley was removed and deported to Liberia by the US Immigration on charges that he (Boley) ‘use child soldiers.’ I remember during your tenure as National President of the GGAA you relentlessly launched programs to see Dr. Boley released here in the US but to no avail. One of those endeavors was the march on DC by a few Grand Gedeans. Now that he’s back home and a free man; if you had an opportunity to speak with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, what will you suggest to her when it comes to Boley?

Martha Kannah: I will personally thank her for the effort that is if she’s involved with his release. I say this to say; when I was National President of the GGAA, I headed a 6-man delegation to meet with Madam Sirleaf in New York. She promised to look into the matter and assigned the then ambassador Barnes to do a follow up. On suggestions, I have no suggestions to make to her because Dr, Boley is back in his own home and moving about as a free man.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Recently the Superintendent Hon Chris Bailey visited the US and held series of town-hall meetings to give the ‘state of the county’ address. It is rumored that during his stay he encouraged Wilson Barlee and Jeremiah Sokan to return home so that one of them can fill his shoes. Do you believe a superintendent should stay in the county with the people for at least a year before appointment by the President of Liberia?

Martha Kannah: I believe it will help if you stay with the people but if it is not a requirement, I see no reason why one should be deprived of that right.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Madam President if you were asked by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to choose between Sokan and Barlee; who will you tap as an eligible candidate for the highest job in Grand Gedeh County?

Martha Kannah: Mr. Weeks don’t do that to me…what an embarrassing question, but really, out of the two individuals I only knew about Wilson Barlee vying for the position because he told me prior to his departure. Sokan, on the other hand did not, but I heard it through the grapevines that he spoke during the visitation of Ellen to the County. I know both men and they are both qualify for the job; but to pick one out of the two is a hypothetical I don’t wish to delve into.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: This year’s convention is going to Jacksonville, Florida (the Sunshine State) and according to the planning committee; Florida is expected to produce huge surprises for the GGAA; from constitution amendments to youth night and a whole lots of development. Will you attend Florida?

Martha Kannah: I will definitely attend the convention because I try not to miss these occasions. Our people often try to misconstrue stuffs and my absence could go down as ‘me not attending the GGAA Convention because I am not president.’ In fact, as we speak, my ticket is being purchased. One advice I have for this august body, is to make sure that Jacksonville produces a law that will penalize any chapter president who does not attend another chapter’s inauguration. I was touched by your story on Indiana Chapter and yet all we know are the four chapters you mentioned. Sometimes you call meetings these big chapters don’t even attend. This must be enacted into law to encourage everyone.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Recently in Voorhees, New Jersey a gala was held in honor of Samuel Kanyon Doe by his children to put a closure to his passing. At that event, one face that stood out was that of Tarloh Quiwonkpa, the widow of the slain commanding general of the AFL Thomas Quiwonkpa who served as guest speaker. If SKD was alive today, what will you tell him?

Martha Kannah: I believe in forgiveness and I must commend Madam Quiwonkpa for taking such a bold step. “An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind…” We cannot be held to account for what our parents did especially in this case and so they all including the family of SKD should move on. If SKD was alive, I will tell him that it is time that by-gone be by-gone and I know he himself would’ve extended an olive branch to the Quiwonkpa family.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: In a February 6 article captioned ‘CORRUPTION PROBE TARGETS FORMER SEC GENERAL’ carried on the MN Web, your former secretary general Jeremiah Sokan was the center of a probe for his alleged refusal to deposit $760 into the coffers of the GGAA. Under Article VIII-Section 5(d) (Elections and Tenure of Elected officers); if the allegation is true; should Sokan be held accountable?

Martha Kannah: Mr. Weeks I take GGAA as my baby; yet we have laws that govern us as an organization and these laws must be respected. If and only if Mr. Sokan refused to deposit those funds into the coffers of the GGAA, he should be held accountable. The article you just cited unequivocally spells it out; as long as it can be proven, let the law take its course. Sokan should be held accountable even if he has a ‘paper’ in his possession.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Anytime one mentions the name Martha Kannah in the GGAA settings; one word that never goes away is ‘locale’ or ‘branch’ as some may call it. There are growing speculations that the Collins-Poah Administration is welcoming suggestions for a constitution amendment for branches to acquire chapter status. If the convention were to be held today, would you vote in this direction?

Martha Kannah: The founding fathers of GGAA structured this organization on a chapter basis because there are many states in this country. Considering distance during my administration, we decided to include ‘branches’ so as to alleviate the burden of a member coming from all the way in Pittsburgh to attend chapter meetings in Philly. However, you don’t want to start creating or encouraging branches to gain chapter status thus given the administration a whole lot of work to handle. Similar case, in your recent story where you alluded to 18 chapters but only 4 are viable; now think about how many dead chapters you will have if you introduce such idea. It will in my view be very confusing and chaotic.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Henry K Glay, the man who you succeeded as National President of the GGAA on March 15 celebrated his 50th birthday. Did you call him to wish him happy birthday?

Martha Kannah: Oh my God! Really I didn’t know about it but I know his elder brother celebrated his 60th birthday a few months ago. However, let me use this medium to extend my homologue happy belated birthday and wish him many more years to come. I am definitely going to call Mr. Glay before this week ends.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Since his ascendancy to the ULAA high office, Gaye Sleh first call was to Grand Gedeans, challenging them in his Keynote address in Philly to “get out of their comfort zones” and engage with grater Liberia by engaging ULAA. In fact, I remember how close your administration was to the Kesselly Administration especially when you openly endorsed ULAA-K over ULAA-S. Do you think Sleh’s call sets a dangerous precedent in that ULAA should be engaging 15 counties instead and not singling out Grand Gedeans?

Martha Kannah: I don’t believe his call was targeted at Grand Gedeans alone, but to keep people fired-up you must assign them with responsibility and not just mere utterances. We have productive and accountable Diaspora Liberians that Sleh can count on to reconcile ULAA. He needs to engage every Liberian especially the youth to explain what ULAA is all about; its motives and objectives. It is just a matter of him reaching out to these individuals and wait for answers.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: On a scale of 1 to 10; 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. How do you grade the Collins-Poah Administration?

I will give them an ‘8’ the reason being, Collins is helping with the chapter count, the hospital project (which I’ve been praying for). Others will sit back and criticize because they are not in the ring. Example, administratively the National President makes report to the National Board and the National Board makes report to the various Local Board members (whom are sent by their respective presidents) who then reports to their Local Presidents who calls local chapter meetings and conveys the state of our union or message to the body. But when I see people writing on the internet requesting for financial report directly from the National President it puzzles me and it’s laughable. It is a downward trend that trickles down.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: It can be recalled that during your official 13-member delegation visit to Liberia, you met with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and requested duty-free privileges from the Liberian Leader. In that confab Sirleaf gave a presidential directive to Minister McClain to arrange those privileges. Since then, have you done a follow up now that GGAA is about to ship medical equipment to Liberia for the hospital?

Martha Kannah: I’ve always been looking for an opportunity to clarify this issue. The duty-free privileges granted Grand Gedeh Association is not an open one where you can just pop up with a container at the Freeport of Monrovia and start to clear customs. According to the President, GGAA will have to inform the Executive Mansion within 10 days before the container arrives and all bureaucratic red tapes will be removed for a smooth clearing.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: When it comes to GGAA politics, there’s one name that will just not go away; that name is Martha Adolphine Kannah. Do you intend to run for the GGAA presidency come 2013?

Martha Kannah: Martha Kannah has not decided to run but all options are on the table for now. Politically, you never say no when it comes to acquiring higher office but for now I am focusing on AMK Enterprise as I mentioned earlier during this interview.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Many times Grand Gedeans in the Diaspora think they can change decisions in Liberia from the Diaspora by writing on the internet and hash criticism of our legislators without directly impacting the lives of ordinary Grand Gedeans. How can the GGAA be assertive especially in the decision-making process in Grand Gedeh County?

Martha Kannah: Through the route we took; similar one is being taken by the Collins-Poah Administration. You can’t sit in the US and call the shots in Zwedru or in Monrovia. You must create a liaison between Monrovia and the US because communication is the lifeblood of any organization. GGAA can be assertive and influential if they keep the line of communication moving with everyone in Liberia especially the people. It will be respected once it pursues valuable projects by impacting Grand Gedeans lives through healthcare and social endeavors.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: But Madam President with this answer some of your critics will see this suggestion as not being a genuine one because you served as President and believe you did nothing in this direction. How do you respond to such criticisms?

Martha Kannah: During our visit in Grand Gedeh we left the US with one major project in mind and that was the Martha Tubman Hospital in Zwedru. Thanks to the Collins-Poah Administration they’ve found value in this project and I can’t thank them better. If you go back and read our platform you’ll see that it is one thing that was enshrined in it. I will always work with this administration to bring this project to fruition because I feel guilty that we are well off here in the US and yet our folks continue to suffer and struggle every day. I am on my knees for the Collins’ Administration to be successful in every endeavor especially their partnership with Brothers’ Brother’s Foundation. Under no time in the history of the GGAA you find the incumbent and the outgoing presidents working together this close and I am overwhelmed.

Kwame Oldpa Weeks: Your final thoughts…Madam President

Martha Kannah: Thanks for this interview it was long overdue. Let’s be mindful an African adage says: ‘when two elephants fight, it’s only the grass and trees that suffers.’ Our people need us and you have to visit Grand Gedeh to see and feel their pain; it is no joke. All these political discourses and parliamentary procedures will not help them so let’s stop the bickering and do what we were appointed to do. There can only be one leader at a time and whoever that person is, it is up to us to rally around that individual and support every effort of that administration. It is a whole circle and we must put up with each other in spite of political differences.

Collins asserts that the GGAA Union comprises eighteen (18) chapters; but it always seem that there are only 4 chapters in the union. Pennsylvania Chapter: the mother of all chapters never runs out of controversies and joyous moments, so is the Minnesota Chapter that critics say is only a merry-making chapter but remains silent on some of its great achievements, and then comes the Iowa Chapter which is known for continuous mismanagements and perpetual leadership scrambles. Illinois Chapter, home of one of the founding fathers William Nyanue-has never been a role-model either for others to follow; which brings us to the question of the day. Do we really have 18 functional chapters in our union?

To answer this question I made a brief journey to the mid-west; when all hopes were dwindling one little chapter has shown what no chapter has demonstrated in the history of our union. After two years of grappling with identify and unity problem, under the leaderships of Cecelia Quaye of South Bend, and Columbus Zinnah of Indianapolis, the two Grand Gedeh Associations in Indiana were able to amicably settle their differences, bury the hatchet and merge becoming one chapter with Indianapolis as their command center without media sensation.

In June of 2011 after all the rigmarole, with no time for election the Grand Gedeans of the Indiana Chapter were able to choose their leaders with a mandate. They

exhibited true unity and leadership by handpicking a band of officers with Cecelia Quaye tapped as President, Philip Doe Jr., Vice-President, Anthony Nyema, Secretary, Benetha Yah, Treasurer and Gibson Garwo as Chaplain respectively.

On Saturday, March 24, 2012 President Tillman Collins headed a 3-man delegation to the city of Indianapolis; his entourage comprised of MN Web Contributor

Kwame Oldpa Weeks and Octavious Gilman-a youth blogger of the GGAA in Michigan, to be a part of the first inaugural ceremony of the Grand Gedeh Association of Indiana. Collins who recently graced the PA Chapter inauguration in Philadelphia, the SKD Gala event in Voorhees, New Jersey and the MN Chapter inauguration in Anoka, MN; still had time to bring his message of ‘restoring unity, service and hope’ to this new-born chapter and his people.

The evening kicked off with the ushering-in of the GGAA National President, GGAA Chapter Presidents, Keynote Speaker, Indiana Chapter’s Chairlady and the newly selected officers. After all the pageantry it was time for the main event when the master of ceremony wasted no time to introduce the guest speaker of the evening. He was William S. Kamanda, MD a Liberian renowned board-certified oncologist (cancer doctor) with private duties in the State of Indiana.

When he took to the podium, it was a total teaching and learning moment. Greeting his audience in the little Krahn he learnt over the weekend, the soft-spoken Kamanda said, “ator-gweh-oh,” meaning ‘good-evening’ and dubbed the theme of his keynote address, ‘Moving Forward in Unity.’

After commending the efforts of the merger, he said, the people of Grand Gedeh like his forefathers have similar cultural and social values and art. Generally, he said, ‘we are emotional and aggressive, but very hardworking, very independent minded thinkers with the yearning to always live in freedom,’ adding, ‘that is the bedrock of our personality and culture and livelihood.’

Admonishing the audience Kamanda told them to strive to always retain what they hold dear that is “our culture” and supports all systems and forums that enhance, preserve and/or promote cultures such as those within the Grand Gedeh Association of Indiana.

James Walker-LAI President-elect

Kamanda was very fervent when he spoke about unity and how we refused to learn from our host country. “The tasks at hand are enormous and daunting,” he said, “but as America has challenged us to be stalwart citizens, so we must challenge ourselves to reach deep inside our souls and find that flicker of light that keeps burning in us, the same light that brought us here to America should trigger the super human in us to join forces for the collective good of our dear homeland,” he cautioned.

He said some Grand Gedeans have done better in this great Country, most he said have done well, why a few

Mr. & Mrs. Isaac Vowal

remain downtrodden but unbeaten; making it emphatically clear that we can join forces and unite, pay our meeting dues, be resourceful and work hard in the interests of our people and the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas.

The second portion of his address was more of a sensitive-teaching experience. On Empowerment: he said the only way to be empowered in this great country (USA) is through education and call on Grand Gedeans to take advantage of avenues and resources available in their communities to advance themselves.

On Compassion: MD Kamanda reminded his audience that they should develop and devote their available time/energy towards empathy for others especially our people.

President Collins Administering The Oath of Office

On Organize: he called on every chapter within our union to devise goals and raise funds for specific projects totally blind to the ethnic divide.

Then came the moment of Social Barometer and Respect for Authority: Kamanda challenged his audience questioning them; how much support do you give to your community in dollars, time and effort? What’s your social standing with the GGAA? Can you be relied upon by many people for your positive thinking and/or deeds? Concluding his address, he said, being civilized and showing respect for each other is a basic tenet of any good productive society.

“Only when there is peace and respect for law and order can true progress occur adding, “as we all have witnessed the death and destruction during the 16 long years of the civil war, we must remember that no one came out victorious.

As a reporter I have never witnessed a keynote address where the speaker was able to craftily convey a teaching moment and deliver same in a timely and feisty manner to a Liberian audience at the audibility of a pin drop.

For her part President Cecelia Quaye personally thanked Columbus Zinnah for his courage and hard work which led to the merger without it being publicized. She called on everyone to follow his example, support her administration and challenged them to attend meetings regularly.

Prior to this merger the two groups operated as legal bodies without the world knowing what was happening in their backyards. Grand Gedeh Association of South Bend, Indiana was founded in 2007 whereas Indianapolis in 2009. Today they are legally recognized as one group and unity and love have since become their mantra; a lesson for all those mega-chapters to follow.

Former National Board Chairman Isaac Vowal, Incumbent President of Liberian Association of Indiana Karsor M. Dennis, Missori President David Zweh, Isaac Carr of Illinois, Newly elected President of the Liberian Association of Indiana James Walker, Paul D. Quaye of Minnesota and Cecelia Gaye of Indiana were in the audience.

The weekend of March 10, 2012 was a busy time for Liberians all over but especially Grand Gedeans. For National Leadership in the Diaspora, individual Liberians attending the ULAA Inaugural ball reports a grand event and a dynamic turnout. I credit that to Mr. Slehs ability to reach out and the stewalt commitment of Liberians to honor and support the Union. Then there was the other event, the launching of the President Samuel K Doe foundation the event I attended as Dr. Gbessagee was the special guest speaker on Peace and Unity.

The night started with the grandeur of the facility, the valet service and the welcoming exercises. I lived mostly in areas where the Bassas, Grebos, Mandingos, Nimbaians, Krus and Americo-Liberians resided and two sets of Grand Gedeans (Cheas and Harrison Penue). I never played with any Grand Gedean while growing up nor was I amongst this many numbers of my fellow Liberians from that county until now. The women as usual were more than the men as it is with any event that is held for both sexes. They were beautifully dressed, mostly in European fashion gowns when it came to the younger generations…and believe it, they all wore 4 – 5 inch heels and wore it well.

The older women wore African dresses that were designed to represent class and outshine as it did. The hall too was jammed packed, they did have a sellout occasion and there was an air of expectation and relief for some. It was evident that this event was important to the host as they paid attention to every detail of participated in the program. The launching stated about thirty to forty five minutes late as most Liberian event do…and I wondered what is going on to myself, I later leaned over to the Doc to express my wonder out loud and later learned that they were waiting for some more participants.

Mrs. Quinwonpa, Mr. Collins, Mr. Boons and others Liberian personalities were there and I wondered who else. Oh, Nancy Doe had not arrived, and then we learned that she was not coming because she had a court case and could not attend. I knew Mr. Sleh was not coming and wondered how this conflict occurred. Then I pushed the thought out of my mind.

We continued the mingling and finally sat at table one with Mrs. Quinwonpa, Mr. Kerkulah Foday and the Doe children. The young Samuel K. Doe Jr. came in and his siblings all stood and welcome him as did his kinsmen and women. He came to our table gracious as ever, well learned, walking up right and proud smiling like his father with a slant crook to his smile. I started to have flash backs to the days that Mr. Doe travelled to the US, for this son was the exact picture of Mr. Doe during that time.

To my immediate right was a beautiful Doe as she had her father’s eyes but a smile that would soften any blow…another Doe sat at our table…or should I say frequented…he was a miniature Doe,..younger of course, well mannered, courteous, spoke eloquently and had an air of seriousness around him… I spoke to him briefly at first as he greeted me and shook my hand… he later kept coming to our table and we spoke a little more. He was a college student, studying law…we talked about Liberia and he shared he would return upon his graduation…we skirted around the issues of the program and the purpose and he shared this in a way brings closure to my father’s death. Which all the Doe children expressed at one time or another.

Mr. Doe shared he did not know his father well as he was 5 years old when he died. I wondered to myself I wonder if he saw the execution tape and wanted to ask his feeling…but then realize that this was neither the place nor the time….but more importantly…this was about the celebration of President Doe’s life and his accomplishment while he was President.

It seemed awkward with Mrs. Quinwonkpa being present for me…my mind began to wander again on the morning of the other coup and the eventual execution and wondered how she truly felt being here. My questions were answered as both Ms. Celue Doe and the Madam herself expressed their hesitation of being at this event together. Celue expressed she and her siblings desire to remember times when Mrs. Quinwonkpa was an aunt as President Doe and Mr. Quinwonkpa were best friends. Mrs. Quinwonkpa graciously accepted the warmth emanating from the children as it seemed pure and true.

There was a need for reconciliation and it been in the truest form…I felt awkward…thinking about this process and remembering that fateful morning, the dancing in the streets, the voice of Thomas on the radio and the President voice about the takeover….I remember hearing the about the execution and the tearing up of body parts and the hurt and anger. I wondered how that friendship deterred…the politicians I later heard tore them apart….hmm and here were the children asking for reconciliation and peace…I imagine this must be difficult …and will be two hundred times over in Liberia. However, it had to be done. I wondered would I…then I thought of the greater good…Liberia and decided it had to happen regardless of the feelings.

I thought about the children of the thirteen executed and gloss over their feeling and silently prayed for forgiveness and hope that they too found closure and the death of their family members….then I thought about the ordinary Liberian who suffered from the senseless Liberia war and prayed for a true way to move forward. I appreciated this first step for this family and decided to listen to the speeches.

Mrs. Quinwonkpa focused on the paths that brings people together, she liken this experience to that of Romeo and Juliet families and how the families united because of that great love. Mention was made of reconciliation and peace…the TRC report came up as a first step in administering justice …I wondered steps …what other ways?…I enjoyed her expression of her feelings about participating in this event…the fear, the indecisiveness and hesitation and then the description of her cause for consenting and how it was important for Liberians to do this for Liberia.

SKD boys turning into men

Mr. Doe rose to speak and in all honesty I tried to trade his statement to that of the first day I heard President Doe speak. This Doe was not stuttering or as forceful….he seemed brave and no I could not imagine a gun in his hand…this was another Doe…equipped with an education (law…he told me)…support from his family and respect and hopefulness from the younger ones in the crowd, this evident from the standing ovation as he spoke about peace and sacrifice. The elder Grand Gedean in the room…an older lady in particular walked up to him, hugged him and told him we need you. I wondered to myself …is it he who should be speaking about this peace and reconciliation….hmm…at the end I knew it was exactly him and others and myself who should be pushing for the true reconciliation we all want…Is TRC the start? Maybe I answered myself.

It was the Doc’s turn…my sweet sixteen….he began by thanking the Doe children for the invite and reminded them it was their duty to tell the story of their father especially his accomplishments and to carry on his legacy. He shared they were once the first children of Liberia… I said to myself…but they were all children …I wondered what were the things the history books would write….I thought about the LU event, the coup, the elections, his execution…I did not know about the in between and decided to listen….I looked around as people were intently listening especially when the Doc began to list all the things that occurred since the 1980 coup….the children eyes were on him…someone beckon for help from Mr. SKD and he rose to leave and another person asked him to sit…you need to listen he said….he complied.

I said to myself these children need guidance …Grand Gedeh can benefit from them. The room got quiet as eyes were turned to the Doc…Oh he said for him the TRC was not the starting point and that what led to the war was way beyond 1979. He shared that in his eyes the TRC was not fair as it intended to excuse some and punish other….he shared no ruling party would persecute their no one if everyone is not held accountable…murmuring started…he focused on the policies and laws that would support all Liberian etc….oh well…the TRC supporters were like…what. Mr. Doe listened…he murmured fairness…. he turned to me and shook my hands and said truly thanks for coming. Another Doe, who is ending her education in medicine promised to build a clinic in her father’s name.

Overall, It was a wonderful experience meeting the children of President Doe…learning more about the in between about him and partly experiencing the tug and hesitancy a person might feel about reconciliation.

I was happy for the closure for the children…they cried and laugh about him and they all expressed loved for him and called him daddy….that soften me when they shared his love for them….I applaud Samuel K. Doe Jr and Celue for this great effort ….because President Doe did bring in some good for Liberia and was able to change the course of Liberia’s history.

Look at where we are today… a woman’s president and the many women in power…etc etc… You see I believe GGAA must do extra to embrace the Doe children.

The Minnesota chapters of the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas will on this Saturday March 17 hold its inaugural program to mark the second and final term of Alexander Barmon and Catherine Kantu. According to our correspondent, Grand Gedeans and well-wishers across the US especially from neighboring Iowa and Missouri are already heading to the ‘twin cities’ in droves to grace the occasion.

During a five-minute tête-à-tête with President Barmon over the weekend at the SKD gala near Voorhees, NJ, he confirmed that a five-man corps of officers including him will be inducted into office. He named Catherine Kantu, Ralph Smith, Theresa Nebo and Marthaline Zeelee as Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Chaplain respectively. Others included Alex Gaye, Randy Kaydea, and Eric Bull all of the MN Board of Directors as new Chairman and members.

The event will be held at 7:00 pm at the Anoka Community Center on 408 East Main Street, Anoka MN with Minnesota finest disc jockey Stanley Flahn in control of sounds. Food and soft drinks are absolutely free why a minimum donation of $25 is highly recommended upon admission. A banquet-cocktail hour accompanied by a red carpet reception to be hosted by Rachel Taye aka LIB diva and media mogul Tarnyon Nyenon. The evening will see other side attractions to include Lil Eddie from Detroit, gospel artist BB Wright, LIB standup comedians Training Tarlue and Kwame Oldpa Weeks.

Barmon confirmed this year’s keynote speaker as Miss Celue Doe, daughter of the late President of Liberia Dr. Samuel Kanyon Doe and a Liberian peace advocate. “Celue’s pick came at a time when we need the youth to help fill the lost gap” adding, “I just couldn’t find someone that unique to speak to our people knowing that the bulk of my members are young adults who are struggling to redefine their roles in our community.” He concluded.

Miss Doe, for her part told MN Web that any opportunity that can be afforded to speak to Liberians will be honored because according to Celue, “I will be able to bring my message of peace and reconciliation to my people.” She confirmed that she will be in Minnesota over the weekend to grace the occasion but refused to give details about the theme of her address.

Since it’s founding the Minnesota Chapter has been going through an uphill struggle; from corruption, to the lack of transparency before President Barmon. Since then, Barmon administration has transformed the chapter and given Minnesota Grand Gedeans something to celebrate especially his bereavement policy and the launching of the MN Web which has been an informative medium for thousands of Liberians both in the Diaspora and around the world.

A source close to the Collins-Poah Administration tells MN Web that the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas stands to benefit from medical equipment and supplies worth thousands of US dollars, pending some bureaucratic red tapes.

According to a March 2nd email sent by the International Medical Program Coordinator of the Brother’s Brothers Foundation to the Collins-Poah Administration; GGAA stands to benefit from 40 manual hospital beds, 15 wheelchairs, 4 examination tables, 1 manual operating table (non electric-refurbished), 2 gurneys, IV poles, crutches and commode chairs. The items mentioned in that email, copy of which is in the possession of the MN Web suggests that the GGAA will have to play its part to secure the donation.

Our source who declined to be named confirmed that 6 persons from the Brother’s Brothers Foundation and other donor agencies will travel from the US to Liberia in late April of this year to see firsthand the condition of medical institutions in Liberia. According to the contract, Brother’s Brothers Foundation is offering to cover the cost of obtaining the medical equipment/supplies, as well as the cost of shipping the container from their facility in Pittsburgh, PA, USA to the port in Monrovia leaving the cost of clearing customs and then transporting the container from Monrovia to Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital in Grand Gedeh to the GGAA.

If this deal is sign and the equipment/supplies do arrive in Zwedru, Liberia; this will be the first of its kind since the founding of the GGAA that such donation is made by an american based non-for-profit organization to the GGAA for the hospital.

When contacted, the National President of the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas Hon. Tillman N Collins told our correspondent that negotiations were ongoing between the BBF and the GGAA. “The relation with Brother’s Brothers Foundation is very cordial; take into consideration that they operate in over 100 countries around the world and we are fortunate to have them visit Zwedru and deliver such gift. All I can say is we are honored.” Collins said passionately.

He said a list has been submitted to his administration and he was working with authorities in Liberia to acquire a special pass once the container arrives in Monrovia. According to Collins, during the recent visit of the County Superintendent, Hon. Chris Bailey expressed his utmost satisfaction when he toured the headquarters of the BBF in Pittsburgh, PA to inspect the consignment for Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital and promised to do everything to assist in the clearing process.

It can be recalled that during an official thirteen-member delegation visit to Liberia, former GGAA President Martha Adolphine Kannah met with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and humbly requested duty free privileges from the Liberian Leader. During that confab, President Sirleaf immediately gave a presidential directive to Minister McClain to communicate with the management of the Free Port of Monrovia to clear a container belonging to the GGAA.

The President however advised Mrs. Kannah to do an official communication to the then Finance Minister requesting such privileges through the Grand Gedeh Legislative Caucus to secure permanent duty free privileges for the GGAA.

Observers marvel as to whether this communication was ever written and if the GGAA has secure such privileges.

The President of the Union of Liberian Association in the Americas (ULAA) Hon. Gaye Duwah Sleh drew sharp criticism minutes after he delivered his keynote address in which he commended the efforts of five Grand Gedeans for what he called, “those who have stepped up to the plate.”

Presenting his keynote address at the second, and final inaugural event of Augustine Manyeah in Philadelphia; the ULAA President who hails from Grand Gedeh County named Steve Boley, GGAA former president Martha Adolphine Kannah, Mrs. Bea Hansford-Swen and Voice of Gedeh CEO Garretson Togba as playing active roles in the Liberian Association.

“As much as I support what we do in bringing social and economical development to our County, we cannot neglect our local Liberian communities and the umbrella organization: the union of Liberian association in the Americas (ULAA) of which your own son is the national president,” adding, “considering Philadelphia, Grand Gedeans have one of the largest populations in this area but when it comes to the Liberian Association of Pa. (LAP) involvement, Grand Gedeans are minority or non-existent,” the President of ULAA argued.

Sleh’s critics view his remark as phony in that his recent victory came from the committed support of Grand Gedeans who flock to Maryland in droves to cast their ballot for (their son) and, questioned whether they were active members prior to voting for him before becoming eventually inactive.

In a related development, immediately after his speech, Sleh was criticized by the National President of Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas, Hon. Tillman Nuahnee Collins. In his usual cool but spirited demeanor; he named Hon. Bai Gbala and Hon. Arthur Watson as former presidents of ULAA who both are sons of the County and dubbed Sleh’s remarks as deceiving.

L/R Hon. Tillman Nuahnee Collins & Augustine Manyeah

Collins reminded his audience that ULAA was founded on the principle of “representative democracy,” in which all Liberians irrespective of origin were free to participate. He said the ULAA Union was founded to unite and represent the interest of all Liberians in the Americas; something he’s yet to see.

“Decades ago, Grand Gedeans have been actively involved with ULAA and I think it’s an understatement to reduce our participation to only 5 persons,” Collins reminded his listeners.

“Why it is true we support ULAA, we have a moral obligation to develop our County thus developing Liberia. Sleh will continue to receive our unflinching support not because he is from Grand Gedeh but as President of ULAA. Similar support has been given to past presidents of ULAA,” he added.

Collins used the medium to caution all Chapter Presidents of the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas to recognize that they are party of the GGAA Union, accountable to its National leadership and not ULAA.

Since it’s founding in 1974 ULAA has since been struggling to find its actual mark especially when it comes to uniting Liberians versus trying to be a viable organization. It continues to struggle with two groups asserting perpetual leadership to identifying its role in the lives of struggling Liberians.

Evidence of this struggle: on Saturday March 10, the ULAA Illinois Chapter under the leadership of Dr. Mariah Seton will host its own induction event in Chicago, the same city and same day Hon. Gaye Sleh’s is expected to take over the gavel of the other ULAA.

In fact, some Liberians continue to argue that ULAA has drifted from its founding principles and has been reduced to a lucrative job-seeking trampoline organization.

Bailey In a Handshake With GGAA President Tillman Collins

It is often said that “the fruit does not fall far from the tree.” This is the case with Grand Gedeh County Superintendent Hon. Chris Bailey who has seen his share of criticism and insults for being a man of his beliefs. When Bailey recently visited the US to undergo a surgery, he fell right into the hands of his Kinsmen when our correspondent caught up with him. From Philadelphia, PA, find attached a verbatim transcript of the beleaguered Superintendent who passionately touched on every question asked; from swirling allegations of corruption, Grand Gedeh Caucus, Dr. George S. Boley and how he (Chris Bailey) wishes to go down in history.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: Welcome Sir and welcome to the US. Can you tell Diaspora Grand Gedeans your mission to the United States?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: September 2011 I had an accident en route from Grand Gedeh to Gbarnga when I sustained an injury to my back and neck. I came to the US for a full medical review the MRI shows that no major surgery is required though my doctors prescribed therapy and I will continue this once I get to Liberia. I believe this should not hinder my job because the office requires more administrative activities as compared to physical.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: There are mounting speculations that you might not be tapped as the next superintendent of Grand Gedeh County; do you wish to respond to this?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: My departure as superintendent is not rumors. I got a scholarship from the Government of Liberia to further my studies but the destination is not yet known. It is my fervent hope that the US be one of the countries selected.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: During your tenure as Superintendent of Grand Gedeh County, were you to leave office today, what will you point to as achievements for the County?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: In 2006, we restored law and order in the county’s judicial system which created confidence between the UP led government and our people who previously thought of reprisals from the government. City ordinances restored, and government buildings in the county reconstructed.

Konobo Superintendent Statutory Building in Ziah Town, Gboleken Building, which was gutted by fire; Putu Penoken District have a new commissioner building, 4 paramount chief’s administrative compounds, conference halls in Gleplay Town, Pour Town, Zahyi Town, Biyahi Town. The famous Zwedru Triangle was a dumpsite when we took office, but it has been transformed to a modern facility with state of the art offices, and entertainment centers.

We engaged the UNDP and built the Zwedru Reconciliation Center with 3 palaver huts and refreshment centers. Earth moving equipment was purchased to open alleyways and roads from Zwedru to Zahyi Town. We introduced Ecobank in the county so as to avoid our people traveling to Ganta just to pick up petty cash at Western Unions. We lobbied to bring cold storages to the county where all neighboring counties especially the Manos and Gios are doing business in the county without being harassed. Under our watch we brought in three logging companies and the Putu mining company.

Central Bank branch introduced to alleviate the travel burden and cash paychecks without deducting a dime from our people’s salaries as was done in the past. We constructed local bridges and provided over $40.000 in scholarship funding for GUSSU in Monrovia. The midwifery school and community college, one of its kinds in the entire southeastern region was introduced under our watch, and we are proud of these achievements since they prove our critics wrong.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: In a story reported by FPA early July of 2010 you were accused of widespread corruption, flagrant abuse and mismanagement of county resources, to having secret bank accounts which puts you as being sole signatory to said accounts; you want to respond to these allegations?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: FPA is 80% owned by John Morlu. He envied me, and we’ve since been at loggerhead because of sexual harassment charges brought against him by my sister whom he attempted to rape. It is unsubstantiated and ridiculous to assert that I embezzled county funds as alleged by this man. I am not the sole signatory to these accounts as mentioned in FPA; they use money, and their influence later to charge my sister with libel just to flip the script but this too is Liberia. It was personal and politically motivated. If he had done his homework well, he would have known that the superintendent is not the principle signatory to these accounts because administratively I was the 3rd signatory to the account and not the first as alleged.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: What is your working relationship with members of the GG caucus and all those representing the county?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: Initially it was cool with Sr. Senator Nyenabo but we have had our ups and downs and I consider this relationship a tensed but stable one. Former representative Rufus Gbayor, on the other hand, was out to make problems, and we never got along. In fact, it was constant tension between us until the people of Grand Gedeh voted him out of office. At no time did the Grand Gedeh caucus ever came to the county for a caucus’ retreat or attended the county development agendas meetings; none. Even during the poverty reduction strategy confabs, not one of them came to the county. As a caucus, I will grade all of them at 0% but as individuals, I will give Hon Zoe Pennoh a 100% markup with a few at 50% here and there.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: Following this voting trend in the county; this has been the second time that the majority of Grand Gedeans overwhelmingly voted for the opposition. As Superintendent how can you reverse this course and change the mindset of the citizens of the county you head?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: It is the intellectual class and not the poor people or those that are illiterate. They (intellectual class) continue to send this wrong message and perception that EJS is out to get them because of the feud between EJS and the late president Doe. EJS visited the county more than any other county and spent five uninterrupted nights in Zwedru. It is the same intellectual group that continues to misinform our people. I hope the Collins-Poah administration of Grand Gedeans in the Diaspora will help to educate them and set a new relationship with Monrovia.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: What is your candid advice to Diaspora Grand Gedeans?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: Develop the attitude of putting county and country first above everything. Erase the concept of ‘government can do it all.’ Some of our brothers possess vast knowledge in different domains and specialties but have since refused to come home and contribute. Yet they have no impact on the US community, and I see no reason why they won’t pack up and head home where they’ll be celebrated and not tolerated. Today after lobbying with government and others in the region to bring the community college to Zwedru, we don’t have a son to head the college like others from other counties have sacrificed in this direction; they need to take advantage and use this US opportunity to develop a business in the county or construct something.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: In a few words; what is the general attitude of Grand Gedeans?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: When there’s a conflict Grand Gedeans unite but when there’s peace, they behave like normal Liberians adopting the ‘crab-mentality-syndrome’ by destroying each other. This has been the trend, and we hope to change this.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: Reports from various media institutions in Liberia suggest that Nancy Doe is not treated well by this government. There’s one report that also suggests that money belonging to her late husband was seized. What is your take on this subject?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: I can say that Nancy Doe enjoys a $1000 dollars bonus from the private pocket of the president and is treated well by her government. Besides, there’s no law in our books (constitution) that stipulates that a wife or spouse of a former president should receive pension once that leader dies or leaves office. What Doe did for the widow of the late Tolbert was out of sympathy like what EJS is doing for Nancy Doe. It is out of total love and passion that they do what they are doing or did. On the money, all I can say is I have not read those reports therefore, commenting further will not be fair to either party.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: Recently a US immigration judge in Batavia, New York declared Boley, 62, who has been in custody for two years, removable from the country. Should Boley be prosecuted once he gets to Liberia?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: No. George Boley did not commit any crime; therefore he should not be prosecuted. If he’s sent to Liberia, he will be received, processed, rehabilitated and release into society like any other deportee. In fact, there are warlords perambulating around in Liberia that are not arrested or prosecuted and though I have not read the story in its entirety, but incarcerating Boley for similar crimes will derail our fragile peace.

KWAME OLDPA WEEKS: Since your ascendancy to this post, there has been a whole lot of tumult spinning around you. How do you wish to go down in history when this is all over?

HON. CHRIS BAILEY: I want to be remembered by the many developments that I carried out for my people and for reconciliation in the county. Creating the Nimba-Gedeh Union, keeping thousands of Nimbaians in Grand Gedeh without one being harassed. Finally, I want to be remembered for the little things and role that I played in needed folk’s life as compared to the big things. This is what matters to me every time I go to bed.

Sokan

Mr. Jeremiah Sokan is believed to be under pressure and probe for his allegedly refusal to deposit $767.00 into the coffers of the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas. The investigation is being conducted by Eric B. Kohn, Chairman of the National Board of Directors of the Association.

The investigation came after a letter dated on February 3, 2012 to the former Secretary General which disclosed a preliminary review of the Kannah/Yonly Financial Report for the period of April-June indicating that the amount of $767.00 was entrusted to Mr. Sokan but has since failed to deposit said amount.

However, when contacted Mr. Sokan vehemently denied the allegation and said it is regrettable that Chairman Eric Kohn will make such allegations without verifying the facts. “No one has entrusted me with money for which I did not deposit.” He furiously asserted.

According to the GGAA former Secretary General, there has been a lengthy running feud between him and Kohn who believes Kohn was out to get him through propaganda and smear tactics. He said the two had never got along during his tenure as the Secretary General.

The three-paragraphed letter acquired by the MN Web read in part: “Mr. Sokan, while the Board continues the review of the financial report, we request that you kindly contact the Collins/Poah Administration to release the amount for deposit as soon as possible if you have not done so. Please note that the Board will release this information to Collins/Poah Administration to contact you without delay. Thank you in advance for your official cooperation. Let us work for the interest of our people and the county we love so dearly.” The letter concluded.

The funds in question are refundable-deposit from the George Boley’s protest funds ($350.00), GDCP cash on hand not deposited ($357.00) and other petty cash withdrawn ($60.00) which was also never deposited totaling an aggregate of $767.00.

When pressed on the issue, the former Secretary General made it unequivocally clear that he does not owe the GGAA neither was any change entrusted to him as alleged by Kohn but was quick to assert receiving a check for $350.00 as refundable-deposit for Dr. Boley ‘s protest march which he claims to be in his possession. “This is the only money I know of and has since contacted the Collins/Poah Administration to take delivery of said check, he concluded.

A credible source close to the Collins/Poah Administration told the MN Web that there is no speck of truth in what Mr. Sokan was suggesting. The source further went on to say that Mr. Sokan was actually contacted in Liberia on numerous occasions, and he told the Collins/Poah Administration that he will deliver the funds once he gets back to the US; something he has yet to do since his arrival.

To validate and verify the report, MN Web contacted Mr. Nathaniel Gaye (Kannah/Yonly former Treasurer-GGAA) for his comments and told our reporter “Yes I generated the April-June financial report which reflects that Jeremiah Sokan is indeed indebted to the Association; but I believe the medium which Eric Kohn is using to collect these funds, is very inappropriate and not in the interest of unity.” He concluded.

In fact, it can be recalled that on November 23, 2011 the Independent Eye News Blog reported a story captioned, ‘GGAA BOARD CHAIRMAN FLEXES MUSCLES.’ In that exclusive interview with the News Blog, Chairman Kohn confirmed giving an ultimatum to President Gbote Tahyor through the Illinois Chapter’s Inaugural Committee demanding that Tahyor provide a full account of every penny due the GGAA.

He said nobody is above the law within the GGAA and as long as he remains Chairman of the National Board he vowed to weed out corrupt elements and ensure that every penny due the Association is paid in full. In a telephone conversation with Kohn, the no-nonsense Chairman was more concern about the source of our information as compared to addressing the issue and waveringly asserted that he was working behind closed doors to put the matter to rest, refusing to comment further.

Observers believe Kohn might have wavered due to pressure from some of his colleagues who believe the Chairman overstepped his bounds by initially making the case for the Collins/Poah Administration.

The GGAA has since been struggling with a laundry list of obligated officials and members who are yet to account for monies and properties taken from the Association.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Konobo Statutory District Association Dr. Al Boley on Sunday made a volte-face by eventually appointing Augustus Cisco Williams as its new leader. Williams’ appointment comes in the wake of allegations of corruption against his former boss who was accused of embezzling over $6000 United States dollars.

Williams previously argued that Article XIII of the KSDA Constitution clearly gives him inalienable right over the presidency of the (KSDA) to succeed former president Solomon Tardey; who was impeached last December.

In a letter dated on Monday January 9, Boley congratulated Williams as the new leader but chastised him saying, ‘true leadership requires conviction.’ The well-crafted letter, copy of which is in the possession of the MN Web, read in part: “We know that your first Standard Bearer (Solomon Tardey) embezzled all the money from the association, weary of the fact that people of similar backgrounds and shades of opinion often align in political ideology,” adding “we do not, however, hesitate to trust the future and integrity of the Konobo Statutory District Association, (KSDA) to your new administration.”

“We hope you will earn the confidence and trust repose in you to ably administer the duties and responsibilities of the national presidency.” The letter of the no-nonsense Boley concluded. Pundits questioned if Williams does not earn the trust of the people, why tap him to succeed his former boss?

Asked for his observations during a brief telephone conversation, Williams said immediately after the January 8th meeting, Chairman Boley called to congratulate him and confirmed that his succession letter was been wired. He said the content of the letter undoubtedly confirms early suspicions and skepticisms about the way and manner in which the chairman handled previous investigations. He questioned as to how Boley will want to ‘eat his cake and have it’ but said that Boley’s letter might have been written out of stress, fear or resentment.

Williams said he’s aware Solomon Tardey embezzled the association’s funds but to align his political ideology and personality to that of Tardey’s is total baloney. “Yes I share the same views politically with Solomon Tardey but one thing we don’t and will never share, is character.” Williams cautiously noted.

When contacted Chairman Boley who was apparently in a meeting promised to return our call after his meeting but failed to do so. All efforts to contact him afterward proved pointless as we were constantly met by his answering machine.

It was collectively agreed at the January 9th tele-confab to uphold the Constitution of the (KSDA) and have Augustus Cisco Williams succeed Solomon Tardey as the new president according to Article XIII. Alex Yallah/PA Chapter, Emmanuel Willie/Missouri Chapter and newly inducted President of the Iowa Chapter Mrs. Susannah Willie were in attendance.

Meanwhile as enshrined in his platform, Williams continue to reiterate promises he made when running as vice-president to Tardey, to unite the people of KSDA, pay teachers’ salary and identify other towns feasible for the construction of elementary schools. He promised to hold a tele-conference to first thank the people of KSDA on his preferment and lay out his vision for reunification.
